Hilarious moment Thai man discovers he has avoided conscription (2025)

This is the hilarious reaction of a man who was spared from having to serve in the Thai military.

Thailand requires men aged 21 or over to attend a 'lottery' day every April where they must enlist in the military for a two-year stint, before being recruited at random.

Every year, videos of Thailand's military conscription lottery are shared on social media as young men discover whether or not they will be exempt from the service.

This year, an unnamed man from Thailand'sKhuan Khanun District was filmed partaking in the yearly draw.

Footage shows thetense moment he walks up to a bucket and draws a piece of paper before handing it to a soldier.

Visibly nervous and surrounded by members of the Thai military, the man puts his hands to his head and takes deep breaths as he awaits his fate, while a crowdcheers and jeers at the anxious potential conscript.

All his worries disappear, however, when he finds out that he will not be serving in the army.

Unable to contain his excitement, the man jumps in the air and lets out a scream, while the crowd of people celebrate alongside him.

But the buzzing man's celebration is suddenly cut short after he falls backwards and slams his head against the hard floor below him.

The three men standing beside him rush to help the man up as he clutches his head, seemingly in pain.

But the fall does not stop him from continuing his celebration, as he then pushes the soldiers out of his way and springs back up onto his feet and continues to jump up and down and he lets out a high-pitched scream.

The man's hilarious reaction has racked up more than 1.7 million views on social media platform TikTok, with viewers expressing their amusement with the man's excitement.

'I love all the divas I've been seeing in the military [lotteries] lately', one TikTok user commented.

Another said: 'He just won his personal lottery...he's free'.

Thailand’s 1954 Military Service Act states that when men turn 21, they become eligible for conscription.

If they don’t volunteer, they have to participate in a yearly lottery every April, where they draw either a black card for exemption or a red card for mandatory enlistment.

Each year, around 100,000 Thai males are recruited for the military

Those who volunteer serve six months, but others choose the annual lottery, which goes on for 10 days in recruitment centers around Thailand.

Nobody wants a red card, which means serving for two years.

Each year, around 100,000 males are recruited.

The April draw is tense, with family and friends gathering in recruitment centres to watch as men are handed their fate.

Thailand's military includes the Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force and has around 300,000 state employees.

While Thai men have to report to their local barracks to be assessed for a stint in the military, transgender women can be excused if they show a doctor's certificate proving their new gender.

Only those not considered physically capable of service, the mentally ill and those who have significantly altered their physical appearance are exempt.

Students can defer while in full-time education.

Many see military conscriptions in Thailand as a male rite of passage

Some wealthy and well-connected Thais have been known to pay bribes to keep their sons from military service, but others see the army as a way out of poverty and a means to discipline unruly sons.

Created as a permanent organization in 1852, the Royal Thai Armed Forces has been treated with deference on the whole, despite some occasional criticism in a country that has seen 11 successful military coups since 1932.

But that started to change in 1973 when it suppressed a student uprising.

The army has also come in for part of the blame in the deaths of 91 people after the government ordered a crackdown on a 2010 anti-government protest.

Some people also question the fact that the army does little to help the vulnerable in its midst. Drug use is prevalent, and some recruits are sexually abused.

But there has been little overt public outcry and no calls to change the system, which is viewed with resignation as something of a male rite of passage.
